But the moment I arrived, the quiet broke.
I saw no turquoise water, no waves folding over the volcanic rocks, only chaos.
A silent, creeping chaos where the beauty used to be. Shards of glass, PET bottles split open, fragments of plastic, alone flip-flop, bent forks, food wrappers drifting in the foam , all of it tangled up with driftwood, dried seaweed, and stones.
Wreckage. The castaway leftovers of a world that can't stop overflowing.
I'd seen this scene before, too many times, but that day, the shock knocked the air out of me.
And in that moment, I understood. Watching wasn't enough anymore. It was time to step into the fight against marine waste.
For weeks, one question had been gnawing at me:
Are beach clean-ups really worth it?
The critical voices kept echoing in my head. Picking up the same waste, over and over: is that a real solution, or just a bandage on a wound that won't close?
On a remote island, what we collect often ends up in an open-air dump. The next strong wind carries it straight back to the sea. Or it gets burned, and the smoke just moves the pollution somewhere else.
I was about to turn back. Maybe today wasn't the day to wrestle with all of this.
And then I saw you.
A small plastic teddy bear, lying on its side in a pile of trash. Your snout and belly scratched, warped out of shape. Your blue ears, half-faded, told the story of a long, silent journey.
You were there, lost among the rest of the debris.
I looked at you. And I walked on.
Just another broken toy. One more forgotten thing.
But a few steps later, I stopped. Something held me back. I turned my head, and our eyes met,as if you were reaching out to me.
I went back. And I picked you up.
That one small gesture changed everything.
As I rinsed you gently in clean water, I gave you a name: Orsolino.
And then the questions came rushing in. Where did you come from? Which child once held you? How did you end up here, of all places?
And behind those, deeper ones began to surface. Legal questions. Economic ones. Scientific, social, logistical…
You were no longer just a toy washed ashore.
You had become the thread of a story. The silent witness of a world adrift.
Through you, I'm going to try to untangle this odyssey, to give a face to the invisible, and to ask the hard questions. Even the uncomfortable ones.
The Unknown Odyssey of Orsolino begins here.
And I'm only here to tell it.
